Don’t forget that there’s another huge tech launch today.

For those of you who have been salivating at the idea of getting their hands on a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, you’re in luck – the phone is available in Ireland now.Samsung launched its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, in the U.S. on Friday, marking the South Korean device maker’s latest attempt to revive smartphone sales after a year of tumbling profits.

As eager buyers who pre-ordered their Galaxy S6 weeks ago prepare to spend the first rays of spring sunshine buried in their new phone disabling bloatware.Paris: Samsung rolled out a new smartphone on Friday in a bid to regain market dominance as arch-rival Apple, eyeing the next generation of wearable technology, opened pre-sales for its first watch. Samsung’s latest smartphone was quite clearly the winner at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, earning worldwide attention for its unique looks. But it may go a little too well, with demand outstripping supply, which has reportedly been limited by the amount of new technology included in the phone. Samsung, labouring under successive quarters of plunging profits and booming sales of Apple’s iPhone 6, is hoping the new phone will reverse its fortunes.

Samsung executives predict record-breaking sales for the latest Galaxy smartphones, which, at a starting cost of $600, will compete in the same price bracket as the iPhone 6. However, the S6 had to contend on launch day with the Apple Watch, which will connect wirelessly to a user’s iPhone to facilitate messaging, calls and apps — especially ones geared toward health and fitness. Instead of their trademark plastic they’ve adorned the S6 series with metal and glass, making for a really premium look, which has a price tag to match. The S6 Edge uses a three-sided screen, which curves over the edge of the phone and means that it can display information and alerts even when it is face down.

Both phones feature the same internal spec, including an octa-core processor and 3 gigs of RAM, and there are options available with 32, 64 and 128 gigs of storage. If you’re one of those people who’s on postman watch, studiously monitoring your postbox like a lion stalking a deer, or you’re just watching the silliness of a launch day unfold from the comfort of your now out-of-date-and-completely-rubbish smartphone, then here are a few talking points.

But in Paris, there were no throngs outside the company’s flagship store by the Place de l’Opera as was the case with the unveiling of previous new Apple products, with journalists outnumbering shoppers. Meanwhile, the range of Samsung’s S6 models has won strong reviews from tech pundits, with the Wall Street Journal calling them “the most beautiful phones Samsung has ever made”. “Given the response from the market and clients … we expect the S6 to set a sales record for all Galaxy models,” Lee Sang-Chul, the vice head of Samsung’s mobile unit, told reporters. Jan Dawson at Jackdaw Research expects Apple to sell around 20 million of the devices this year, which will “catalyse the overall smartwatch market and help other vendors even as Apple comes to enjoy levels of market share it hasn’t had since the iPod”. The Galaxy S3 is thought to be the phone that sold most overall, but the S4 probably sold more in its first year when phones tend to be most profitable, according to Reuters.

And there’s also the price to consider – the 32 gig Galaxy S6 starts at €670 on the Three network and you could pay just shy of a grand for the Edge 64 gig on Vodafone. Samsung suffered a dramatic slide in profits last year, hit by slowing demand in an increasingly saturated and competitive smartphone market that it had largely dominated since 2011. The company struggled to fend off a double challenge from Apple in the high-end market and rising Chinese firms such as Lenovo and Xiaomi in the fast-growing mid and low-end markets. Samsung rarely discloses handset sales figures but analysts say the Galaxy S4, released in 2013, set the firm’s sales record of 70 million units globally.

To get people to participate, Tesco gave away a couple of S6 units (minus the space dust presumably) to people who guessed the exact time that the balloon ferrying the S6 would burst. From showing off the screen with a visually stunning game like Monument Valley, to finding the nearest wireless charging spot with Powermat, you can make the most of your new phone with my list of essential Galaxy S6 apps. Whilst James Corden slowly wins over the US with his new talk show The Late Late Show, Samsung is looking to capitalise on his rising fame by drafting him in for a new S6 advert.

The “best on the market” moniker is a claim that comes directly from Samsung, but it has been recently backed up by respected screen-tech experts, Displaymate. Google Wallet suffered from this and – whilst it has an impressive amount of partners on-board – Apple Pay will have to deal with this problem too. Of course, every smartphone manufacturer wants to emulate a fraction of the quality of the iPhone’s camera, but few are so candid about its intentions.

Samsung focussed showed off the new Sony IMX240 16MP sensor and improved f1.9 lens (which makes it super fast) in the S6 with some low-light pictures. by Two photos went up on the giant stage screen of a couple canoodling in a fabricated romantic setting. Samsung didn’t really have many options other than go super-premium when it came to designing the S6 – competition from HTC and Apple made sure of that. Samsung also resisted the trend to go bigger with the screen size, sticking to a manageable 5.1-inches rather than something more polarising like the Nexus 6’s 5.96-inch display. Samsung says that the combination of the efficient Exynos 7420 chipset and less bloated TouchWiz is enough to offset a smaller battery with little impact on battery life. But even if the S6 achieves a similar amount of usage time as the S5, it will still be disappointing to not have improved battery life in the latest handset.

The other major issue is the omission of a micro SD slot, waterproof housing (although there might be a waterproof Galaxy S6 on the way) and removable battery, which has irritated some long-term Galaxy owners. Multiple manufacturers have recently launched new phones that they’ll happily exchange for a slice of your hard-earned, blood, sweat and tear-soaked cash. This gives Samsung Pay an immediate advantage in that US and Korean customers will be able to use it pretty much anywhere they wish the day they boot the Edge up. Samsung also sent TouchWiz off to The Biggest Loser for the winter and it has returned 40% less tubby, which apparently adds some extra zap to the phone’s overall speed.

The more accurate scanner also has additional, useful functions such as combining with Samsung Pay for mobile payments, and quickly launching the camera via double tap.
