A new timeline feature in Google Maps keeps tabs of all your past traversals

Create Custom Names For Your Favorite Places on Google Maps.

If you own a mobile device, and have opted into location tracking in one or more of Google’s many services, such as Google Photos or Google Now, the company is keeping a record of your past movements. The most recent version of Google Maps for Android lets you retrace your steps with a new timeline feature, but there’s more to explore when you dig deeper, like creating custom names for places on your maps. Google’s location history — now replaced with Timeline — already offered all this data, daily and monthly, but in a less visually appealing and less curated format. Tap on the info card at the bottom or tap the pin again to bring up more details, then open up the context menu via the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

So you can create pins for “Bob’s house” or “the secret rendezvous point”, or change the title of your favorite bar to the name that everyone calls it. You can delete your entire history by clicking on the settings icon in the lower-right hand portion of Timeline and selecting “delete all location history.” To stop Google from storing your location history moving forward, go to My Account, click on “account history” and turn off the “places you go” option.

The feature doesn’t look quite finished yet—your changes don’t appear on the web or an iOS device—but it’s a good way to make your digital cartography a little more personal.

Here you can write a commentary on the recording "A new timeline feature in Google Maps keeps tabs of all your past traversals".
