Android chief pledges new emoji are on the way.

With the release of iOS 9.1, not only did Apple address several bugs within the operating system, but it also seems that they have introduced new wallpapers and emojis. But fret not, Android friends, newly appointed senior VP of Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, has heard your feedback and promises to make the Android emoji state better.Hiroshi Lockheimer, the senior vice president for Android, Chrome OS, and Chromecast, took to Twitter to pledge that Google will catch up with all those missing icons your iPhone friends get to use.

It’s unclear exactly how long it’ll take Google to incorporate the new emoji characters into Android, but hey, at least we know that Google’s on it! Earlier this week Apple debuted iOS 9.1 with over 150 new emoji for iPhone owners, but it looks like Android users will soon be able to enjoy the same treat. That was the case this week when iPhone users upgrading to iOS 9.1 got a massive new batch of emoji from Unicode 7.0 and 8.0. that includes the highly coveted middle finger emoji. On Twitter late last night, Lockheimer confirmed that the new emojis from Unicode 7 and 8 — the ones that Apple just pushed to iOS devices in version 9.1 of its mobile OS — are on their way… This tweet probably comes in indirect response to a Reddit thread from yesterday, complaining about the fact that Google is quite often playing catch up when it comes to the adorable faces and icons. This week iOS received a huge update and millions of iPhone users were happy to learn that they now have over 150 additional emoji characters on the default keyboard.

The Mountain View company was slower to introduce an emoji keyboard after Apple introduced it to Japan in iOS 2, and finally brought it international with iOS 5. According to Lockheimer, “So I have a feeling y’all want new emojis? a) Thanks for the feedback, b) We’re on it, and c) Sorry!” Unfortunately Lockheimer did not mention when the update with the emojis will be released, but at the very least we suppose Android users can take comfort in knowing that it has been acknowledged. That includes a a few interesting new faces, a middle finger, a robot, a lion, a unicorn, a hot dog, a taco, a burrito, a floating man in a suit, and lots more. It’s not clear at this point which version of Android will be getting the taco, the middle-finger, and the burrito, but it’s likely going to happen before Google releases Android 7.0 next year.

Android chooses to represent faces in emoji using little blob people that could be a close cousin to the Oompa Loompa, instead of the typical round faces you see in most other operating systems and apps. For the most part, emoji aren’t all that fun on Android, and most end up adding an expansion app from the Play Store to get access to everything available on the iPhone. His tweet confirms that they’ve received all the feedback and appreciate the response from users, that they’re “on it”, and ends by saying sorry.
