Apple Announces 50% iOS 9 Adoption And iPhone 6s Launch Day Specifics.

Less than a week after Apple released iOS 9, the company announced the software has hit 50 percent adoption, meaning more than half of existing iOS devices have installed iOS 9.

Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 9, has been downloaded at a faster rate than any other previous Apple OS, according to a company statement. This comes after an estimated 12 percent adoption rate in the first 24 hours after the software was launched, and means that iOS 9 now has the fastest adoption rate in Apple history. The update promises an extra hour of battery life, fewer bugs and a new Siri home screen that predicts what apps users will want to use next, among other things like an improved Apple Maps. The device will be going on sale in the United States, as well as Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Hong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the U.K. While Apple hasn’t announced any preorder statistics yet, the company told CNBC last week that they “are on pace to beat last year’s 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale Sept. 25.”

MacRumors said early analysis had shown that users had installed both operating systems at roughly the same pace, and it remains to be seen if any technical glitches could slow down the downloading of iOS 9, as was the case with the previous OS. In the past, some of Apple’s initial iOS software updates haven’t been tuned well to older phones, causing owners to report slower performance, among other problems. But in a Wall Street Journal test on four generations of iPhones—the 4s, 5, 5s and 6– the software update slowed down the entire lineup by only a negligible amount. The fracturing of many mobile phones running different variations of the Android OS means upgrading new versions take much longer on Google’s platform.

The early 12% adoption rate for iOS 9 among Apple users in 24 hours, for example, took Android’s last operating system, Lollipop, 5 months to achieve.
