An Apple Electric Car Is Coming To A Road Near You Sooner Than You Thought — REPORT.

The Wall Street Journal’s Daisuke Wakabayashi this afternoon reports that Apple (AAPL) intends to ship its own car by 2019, citing multiple unnamed sources. Apple “is accelerating efforts to build an electric car, designating it internally as a ‘committed project’ and setting a target ship date for 2019,” writes Wakabayashi. Wakabayashi’s report follows a reports on Friday that Apple executives met with officials of California’s department of motor vehicles to discuss the “autonomous vehicle” regulations of the department, as was related on Friday by The Financial Times’s Tim Bradshaw, citing DMV remarks. According to sources, the project has been codenamed Titan, and employees from across the company have been reassigned to the effort, reportedly tripling the original 600-person team spearheading it.

Monday, the website was fully functioning again.) While Apple has declined to comment on the Journal’s report, the newspaper’s sources alleged that the 600-person team working on the vehicle will be tripled, signifying a huge commitment to the project. The increased focus should give a clue as to how ambitious the effort is; the 2019 date is one year ahead of original projections for the car’s debut. For Apple, getting the complex task of building a car ahead of schedule, even after hiring numerous experts from the auto industry, is a huge deal — especially since the company has no experience in car-making. Unlike Google’s self-driving cars, the Apple car won’t be completely driverless, the newspaper reports, but it will have features that imitate a self-driving car.

The company hasn’t said anything officially about iPhone 6S preorder numbers, but has hinted that they are “positive,” according to tech blog 9to5 Mac.
