Apple Stores Swap Nest Thermostat For HomeKit Devices.

It was fun while it lasted, but with HomeKit devices appearing on store shelves, the Google-owned Nest Learning Thermostat is disappearing from the Apple Store.

Apple confirmed to Mashable it has pulled the web-connected product — considered the first mainstream smart home product — from its shelves and website. One of the first retailers to stock the tech-savvy appliance, Apple added Nest’s smart thermostat to its inventory in May 2012, selling it for $249.95.

That’s not to say that you can’t find non-HomeKit devices in Apple’s connected home section, but the Nest Thermostat isn’t most smart home devices, as Mashable points out. It’s probably the most well-known thermostat ever—save perhaps the near-ubiquitous Honeywell brand of not-so-smart home temperature regulators—and the most talked-about smart home device. Despite obvious similarities between the Ecobee3 and Nest’s Learning Thermostat, the two are quite different: Nest’s device takes a couple of weeks to understand you and your usage habits, while the Ecobee3 says it dives right into the energy savings. Apple’s product assortment is always changing — and it recently scaled down on the number of items it is offering in stores — but the removal doesn’t come as a huge surprise as the company looks to promote the incoming flux of HomeKit-enabled devices. The news was initially broken by Forbes which claimed that upon entering the word “Nest”; the Apple’s online stores shows HomeKit-enabled products like the ecobee 3 smart thermostat.

After the Apple Watch and Apple Health were announced, the company later stopped selling Fitbit and Jawbone trackers, though Jawbone trackers returned to Apple stores in June. Bose speakers were temporarily yanked amidst the Beats acquisition, while Nike and Jawbone also saw their gadgets disappear to make way for Apple’s own wearable. A spokesperson for Nest stated that Apple is considered as a valuable partner for the company, and that its new devices will resume selling through Apple along with other channels over the coming weeks.

It is speculated that the unavailability of Nest’s product from the Apple’s sites in US will be only for a month and Apple will start selling them again, very soon.
