Handoff and Continuity: Compelling reasons for small business to go all Apple.

Chitika also notes that Yosemite and Mavericks adoption is well ahead of that seen by OS X Mountain Lion in 2012, when just 5.6 percent of Mac users upgraded in the first week of availability.

Chitika said: “With these data points in mind, it’s clear that the free upgrade model continues to assist Apple in posting impressive rates of OS X adoption. “This is particularly beneficial for Apple when it comes to Yosemite, as the OS boasts a much tighter integration with iOS, a pillar of the company’s longer-term strategy.” “While this would represent a substantial change to Microsoft’s revenue model, it speaks to the level of success Apple and others have realised with free software upgrade programmes in recent years.” Apple revealed in its Q4 earnings call that it had sold 5.5 million Macs during the three-month period, up from an expected 4.85 million and setting a new record during a quarter. The Handoff and Continuity features that debuted in iOS 8, and then shortly after appeared in Yosemite, can be valuable tools for team communications. Although I’ve always felt that texting should be avoided for business communications, that line has blurred for me given the benefits with texting for businesses using Handoff.

When a simple text conversation becomes more involved, workers can move to a device with hardware that facilitates detailed replies, which allows text messaging to move into the more useful territory of email. If you start an email on the iPhone but decide that a more detailed communication is needed, once you’re back in the office you can bring up the email on any other device with a simple swipe. This works with several Apple apps, and since it’s open to third-party developers, we should see lots more apps take advantage of Continuity in time.
