Apple Stores Swap Nest Thermostat For HomeKit Devices.

Cupertino has pulled the Nest Learning Thermostat from its online and brick-and-mortar shelves, making room for an early set of smart home products designed for its HomeKit platform. The smart wars are on as Apple has pulled Google-owned Nest’s smart thermostat from shelves in its retail stores and online just as the first batch of products that work on Apple’s HomeKit arrive. One of the first retailers to stock the tech-savvy appliance, Apple added Nest’s smart thermostat to its inventory in May 2012, selling it for $249.95. Apple have confirmed to Mashable that the Nest Thermostat has been removed from their retail and online stores, although they not give any specific reason for the removal. Despite obvious similarities between the Ecobee3 and Nest’s Learning Thermostat, the two are quite different: Nest’s device takes a couple of weeks to understand you and your usage habits, while the Ecobee3 says it dives right into the energy savings.

Apple’s product assortment is always changing — and it recently scaled down on the number of items it is offering in stores — but the removal doesn’t come as a huge surprise as the company looks to promote the incoming flux of HomeKit-enabled devices. After the Apple Watch and Apple Health were announced, the company later stopped selling Fitbit and Jawbone trackers, though Jawbone trackers returned to Apple stores in June. And it goes without saying that Nest may never come with HomeKit compatibility at any time in the future, what with this recent move and Google having announced its own Brillo platform. Bose speakers were temporarily yanked amidst the Beats acquisition, while Nike and Jawbone also saw their gadgets disappear to make way for Apple’s own wearable.
