Apple Names It App Of The Year.

A new report out today details the growth of the Apple TV App Store in the month or so it’s been live, noting that the store has already grown to include 2,624 applications, the majority being games. It’s pretty simple to use: You open the app, click “broadcast,” title your subject, start recording and now your Twitter followers can watch your live video stream. The live-streaming video app, Periscope, netted ten million users by August this year since the product launched at the end of March. “This game-changer made sharing and watching live videos an instant obsession,” said Apple in announcing the winner. Details of apps broken down by category was also included in the company’s analysis, and not surprisingly, “Games” was the most popular category with 1,002 apps (or 38% of all apps).

The runner-up was photo editing app Enlight. “When we launched Periscope this past March, we had no idea what to expect,” Periscope said on its blog. “We certainly hoped people would like what we had built, and would find value in using it. It’s an impressive number, considering the device has been available for just a little under six weeks old and a clear indicator that developers remain optimistic about the young platform. Apple called Enlight for iPhone “the best all-in-one photo editor [providing] powerful tools that are easy to use,” and said Lara Croft GO “floored us with its beauty and clever design.” Enlight, by Israeli developer Lightricks (designed in a challenge to Adobe), and Lara Croft GO, by Japan’s much-loved Square Enix, won app and game of the year, respectively, in Apple’s ‘Best of 2015’ round-up released Wednesday.

The report confirms the popularity of some of these additional categories, noting that behind Games and Entertainment, the next next most popular were Education, Lifestyle, Utilities, Music, Health & Fitness, Photography, News and Sports. Apple lets developers choose from 20 categories when submitting an app to the App Store, although only seven categories are currently visible for users to browse.

According to the report, the top categories of apps actually being downloaded are Entertainment, followed by Games, News, Sports, Education, then Weather, Finance, Music, Photography and Utilities. All that being said, it’s still early days for Apple TV – the store is seeing 447 new apps added every week, and with that rate of growth, these trends could change at any time. He said the makeup of new Apple TV purchases are split down the middle, with half made by customers upgrading from an older Apple TV, while the other half is first-time Apple TV owners.
