Apple Watch Heads to Best Buy

Apple Watch Hits Best Buy Aug. 7.

Best Buy Co. says it will sell the Apple Watch at 100 of its stores and on its website on August 7. Cupertino’s wristwatch comes in Sport, Watch, and Edition models, each with its own bands, colors, and characteristics, ranging in price from $349 to $17,000. A lack of innovative products has been hampering demand for the broader electronics industry, with the few bright spots being mobile phones — like last year’s release of Apple’s iPhone 6 — and ultra-high-definition televisions. “The Apple Watch is an important addition to an emerging product category, and we know our customers want it,” Jason Bonfig, Best Buy’s senior category officer, said in the statement.

A longtime Apple partner, Best Buy in April added support for Apple Pay on mobile; it will begin accepting digital payments in U.S. stores later this year. But the retail giant isn’t really a one-smartwatch kind of store: Last week, the Pebble Time landed at Best Buy, on sale in black, white, and red for $199.99. For Apple, expanding distribution to Best Buy will be a test of whether the watch can evolve from a pricey, niche product into a mass-market hit like its laptops, phones and tablets.
