Apple Watch Sport and Accessories Now Available at Walmart

Almost half of Apple Watch owners have used their nose to operate the device.

The retailer is selling the watch at only a few select stores at this point, a Walmart spokeswoman told Fortune. That was one of the questions posed early on Thursday at Glance, a day-long conference in San Francisco devoted to Apple’s AAPL -2.57% first wearable device. The addition of Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer with $290 billion sales a year (including about $13 billion online) gives Apple much more reach in selling the device.

And for Walmart, it could drive traffic to its website, on which it is spending billions to make it better compete with and other e-tailers. Adding Walmart as a distribution path for the high-end wearable follows similar moves Apple made earlier this year to sell the device on, and in Target’s U.S. retail stores. Another 28% of respondents said they hadn’t but indicated that they “now want to try.” As some users have pointed out on forums, the nose is a good alternative when both hands are occupied (eg. carrying groceries) or covered by gloves that don’t work on touch screens.

Walmart, however, is not offering any further discounts on the device for the time being – despite the fact that Best Buy just recently slashed the price of the Apple Watch by $100 on its website, in a sale that will extend through Christmas. News of the discounts and, now, the expanded retail channels, hints that Apple may be attempting to clear out Apple Watch inventory ahead of the rumored reveal of the second-generation Apple Watch. According to sources cited by, the new model may be introduced at a March 2016 event, but it’s unclear what new features or functionality it may offer if that’s the case.
