Apple Watch battery life as short as 2.5 hours, report says.

The much heralded Apple Watch, the tech giant’s first new product category since the launch of the iPad, will go to market this year with a battery life that could be as low as 2.5 hours for active use, according to a report in 9to5mac.Even Apple hasn’t cracked the smartwatch battery code: A new report suggests the upcoming Apple Watch will provide up to 3.5 hours of app use between charges.’For the first time, people with knowledge of the Apple Watch’s development have provided us with the specific performance targets Apple wants to achieve for the Apple Watch battery, but the actual numbers may fall short of those targets,’ 9to5mac’s Mark Gurman said. ‘According to our sources, Apple opted to use a relatively powerful processor and high-quality screen for the Apple Watch, both of which contribute to significant power drain.’ It says that Apple wanted the Watch to provide roughly 2.5 to 4 hours of active application use versus 19 hours of combined active/passive use, 3 days of pure standby time, or 4 days if left in a sleeping mode,’ it says.

But once again—even if it is cool, cooler than the dozens of other smartwatches on the market—none of that will matter if its battery doesn’t last long enough. Apple is putting the finishing touches to its Watch ahead of an expected launch in March – and yesterday released a test version of the software that will link it to an iPhone. ‘Additionally, the instructions inside of the Bluetooth menu specifically indicate that Apple will release a dedicated ‘Apple Watch app’ for setting up and controlling the wearable device. The watch should be able to “display its clock face for approximately three hours, including watch ticking animations, if nothing else is done with the device,” the report said. So far Apple has refused to reveal exactly when it will be released, although a statement made to Apple employees suggests the release will be in ‘the spring.’ However, breakthroughs have been made in the number of successful yields for the watch’s display and processor, according to Taiwan’s United Daily News late last year. ‘One or two representatives from many Apple Stores in the United States, depending on store and market size, will be sent to Apple offices in either Cupertino, California or Austin, Texas to learn first-hand about the Watch,’ he claims. Apple fans may get their wrists on the new wearable as early as March: Recent reports tip “extensive testing programs” at Apple retail stores next month, ahead of a March rollout.

Well-known venture capitalist Fred Wilson also wrote early this year that Apple’s first wearable device is not likely to be the “home run” that other Apple products have been. The apps that Apple chose to focus on during its keynote in September were fairly uninspiring, like the etch-a-sketch-like app that lets you draw a picture and send it to another Watch wearer, and the one that lets you transmit your heartbeat via haptic vibration. People who do not own iPhones will start buying Android Wear smartwatches that are compatible with their own devices, and apps that are developed for Apple’s Watch will quickly be transposed to Android.

These could include transport apps that tell you which platform to go to as you walk into a train station, or voice recognition apps that let you “set an alarm for 10 minutes” just by speaking the words. For example, a wearer could follow a football match by having a notification pop up every time a goal is scored, or get breaking news bulletins delivered to their wrist.

They could also be used for payments, in the same way that contactless cards are used today – although Apple has not yet announced any plans to launch Apple Pay in the UK. Traditional watch brands like GUESS are already bringing out their first ‘smart’ devices, and the market is expected to become increasingly competitive over time. At the moment, glancing at your watch at the wrong moment can cause great offense, and smartwatches demand far more attention that traditional timekeeping devices. “If you’re sitting having dinner with someone, or you’re in a meeting with someone and you keep looking at your watch, right now that is synonymous with saying, I’m bored, I’ve got somewhere to go, I’m late,” said Wood. “That is going to be one of the real headaches that smartwatches are going to have to overcome.
