Classic PlayStation 2 games ready to run on the PlayStation 4.

Sony’s enigmatic PlayStation 2 games that brought immense joy and excitement in the yesteryears will finally make its way into its present generation gaming console. When exactly Sony is planning to announce Dark Cloud for the PlayStation 4 isn’t clear, but the leak may mean a major backwards compatibility reveal at the PlayStation Experience on Saturday. But although many have begun to assume Sony is on the cusp of announcing backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 2, and possibly 3, the small print for Dark Cloud suggests otherwise.

Referring to the new trophies PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that they were “developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.” Not only this but these eight games will also contain support for multiple PS4 features such as remote play, share play, live broadcast, activity feeds and second screen support for game manuals. Owners of PS4 will be able to download and enjoy PS2 games through the PlayStation Store in the North America, South America and Europe, Sony announced on its press release on Friday. Though fans must be aware that this is not exactly backwards compatibility, if you own the PS2 disc you will be required to buy the game again for PS4. The Japanese consumer electronics firm flaunted its PS2 games such as Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud in full throttle in high-def on a PS4 in a video uploaded to its YouTube page. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president, says that the company plans to bring additional PS2 games to the PS4 “on a regular basis.” The announcement video for the feature even showcases some of the future titles, which includes classics such as Fantavision, PaRappa The Rapper 2 and Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits.

Sony spokesman said in an emailed statement, “PS2 titles playable on PS4 will support 1080p/60fps, trophies and features unique to PS4 — Live Broadcast, Share Play, Remote Play, Activity, Second Screen — and offers an upgraded gaming experience compared to PS One/PS2 Classics.” This seems to be nearly a conflicting approach as Sony’s chief console competitor, Microsoft. However, hits such as The Mark of Kri and Rogue Galaxy have me more than interested in the service and I’m excited to see what Sony chooses to bring over further down the line, as there are plenty of PS2 titles I would re-buy for the PS4. Also a month ago, Sony stated that it has sold over 30.2 million PlayStation 4 video game consoles all across the globe ever since the gaming console went on sale in November, 2014, outperforming host of other present-generation gaming consoles such as Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U.
