Facebook admits iOS app drains users’ iPhone batteries, issues update.

The battery issues didn’t seem to be resolved by any of the normal fixes. iPhones allow users to turn off background updating and force quit apps, so that they shouldn’t be able to do anything, but the app continued to put a huge drain on phones and work in the background. If you leave the application after watching a video, the audio session sometimes stays open, “as if the app was playing audio silently,” Grant wrote. “This is similar to when you close a music app and want to keep listening to the music while you do other things, except in this case it was unintentional and nothing kept playing,” the post said.

The Internet lit up last week with complaints about Facebook’s iOS app, which Matt Galligan, co-founder of now-defunct news aggregator Circa, called “the greatest offender of battery drain” on his iPhone 6s Plus over seven days. Comparatively, Apple’s Safari browser accounted for 12 percent of Galligan’s usage over the week, followed by Messages and the Home and Lock Screen, each of which took up 6 percent. “We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused,” Grant said. “We are committed to continuing to improve the battery usage of our app and you should see improvements” in the updated version.
