Facebook admits iOS app drains battery; issues updated version to fix it.

Facebook’s apps have been known to drain battery life, but last week iPhone users were reporting that their batteries were being drained faster than usual. Facebook’s Ari Grant in his post acknowledged the issue and explained that the latest Version 42.0 has some improvements that takes care of the ‘CPU spin’ in the network code, which he explains is like a child in a car asking constantly “Are we there yet” – a repeated processing that unnecessarily soaks up more battery.

This is similar to when you close a music app and want to keep listening to the music while you do other things, except in this case it was unintentional and nothing kept playing. The app isn’t actually doing anything while awake in the background, but it does use more battery simply by being awake.” Contrary to reports about location history being the cause behind battery drainage, Grant clarified that none of the issues identified were related to location services or the option location history feature.
