Facebook Takes A Step Toward Virtual Reality With New 360-Degree Videos.

Facebook has introduced a 360-degree “spherical” video feature in its newsfeed, allowing users to roam around inside the latest “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailer.The social media giant announced Wednesday that it’s enabling 360-degree videos in its News Feed, starting today with a full rollout taking place over the next few months. “To create 360 videos,” Facebook said in a press release, “a special set of cameras is used to record all 360 degrees of a scene simultaneously.” Users will be able to move their devices around to see in any direction or manipulate the video angle with their cursors or their fingers, as demonstrated by a Star Wars clip in the video below.

On the web you can do this by dragging around the video with your cursor, and on mobile devices you do it by dragging with your finger — or even just by turning your device.LeBron James and personal trainer Mike Mancias do yoga in Miami not only to get ready for the 2015-16 NBA season, but also for inclusion in a new virtual-reality documentary on James’ workouts. The firm has signed up several publishers to launch the system, including Star Wars, Discovery, GoPro, LeBron James & Uninterrupted, NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and VICE. Action camera maker GoPro Inc has posted a video on motocross riding in the Idaho desert, while Vice Media has released a video of on-the-ground reporting in Afghanistan. In June, YouTube enabled the surround vision for its mobile app when a device is attached to one of Google’s cardboard virtual reality headsets, which retail for a few dollars.

Footage of those training sessions was captured and produced into a documentary called “Striving for Greatness.” But how consumers experience the show is new. In the case of the “Star Wars” trailer, users can look behind a moving aircraft or see what is happening on the side by dragging their computer mouse over the video on a desktop. Facebook is attempting to get its users hooked on virtual reality – technology the company has bet big on. “Over time, we’ve seen that people enjoy more immersive content in their News Feeds”, Maher Saba, engineering director for video at Facebook,wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. The full-length documentary will be available in November November in five episodes on Facebook 360, and also as a “stand alone, 3-D 360″ degree virtual-reality experience on the Oculus Rift headset, according to a news release.

James’ partnership with Facebook is actually through Bleacher Report’s “Uninterrupted,” a series of athlete video testimonials through which James has an undisclosed financial arrangement. James is coming off arguably the best individual performance in Finals history, when he averaged 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 8.8 assists (all NBA records) in the Cavs’ 4-2 loss to Golden State. But James also suffered dips in his shooting percentage (48.8 percent), three-point shooting (35.4 percent), free-throw shooting (71 percent) and rebounding (6.0 per game) during the regular season, a season in which he missed a career-high 13 games.

So James, a four-time NBA MVP and two-time champion, may have done a total rewrite on his game rather than hone in on an area or two to improve – which is what he normally does during the off-season. “I never take the game for granted,” James said. “I was born with some God-given talents and I understand that, but I work my ass off, I work my tail off every single day, and not when you guys see it.
