Facebook launches “On This Day” feature to re-live your past memories

After years of testing, Facebook releases On This Day personal history reminders.

If you’re one of the billion or so people using Facebook to connect with friends and family, you now can use the social networking site to automatically celebrate your important memories.”People often look back at old photos and other memories they’ve shared on Facebook, and many have told us that they enjoy products and features that make this easier,” he said.

On This Day, a tool launched by Facebook on Tuesday, takes anything from birthdays to wedding anniversaries logged on the site and notifies you of the special moments on a dedicated page on the site, through your News Feed or via mobile app. Facebook has been testing the feature for several years, but this is its official debut after the company took in user feedback to develop the current iteration of the feature. One of our investors put it really nicely that if Facebook isn’t playing in your space, you’re probably not doing something worth doing,” he said. The feature has actually been tested for a number of years, but Facebook officially announced it yesterday and said that it would roll out to everybody. Facebook Newsroom stated that a user might see past status updates, photos, posts from friends and other things which they shared or had been tagged in, either a year or two ago and so on.

It is being said that to avoid any painful memory, Facebook will avoid showing posts from people who have died or from people who were in a relationship with the user earlier and have changed their statuses now. That app also gives users daily reminders of what they were up to in the years since, allowing them to then post that information onto social networks.

While Facebook will only bring up memories from its site, Timehop can pick up memories from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr, Dropbox, iPhoto or even our phone gallery. Users unable to see the feature today should just give it a little more time as the company gradually distributes the feature to its mobile and desktop users globally in the coming days.
