Apple predicts iPhone 6s sales will break records.

The phone was launched this morning, and the first to get it in the UK were those that had waited outside shops to get hold of the Apple Store’s allocation. The launch, which starts at 8am in countries around the world , marks the beginning of a busy autumn for the technology firm, which also announced a new, larger iPad set to be released in November. To begin with, Apple has added an improved Touch ID home button, a new 5MP front camera and the new 3D Touch. “We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Apple is all about the little things.

Some had worried that Apple’s blockbuster launches had come to an end with the Apple Watch, which was launched in a less high-profile ceremony and was initially only available to buy online. Of course, since the iPhone 6 — and especially the iPhone 6 Plus — were a big change from the iPhone 5S, last year’s teardown was a bit more intense. Several hundred people queued outside Apple’s Covent Garden outlet in central London, with coffee being handed out to those who had waited overnight. But the event featured the same long queues and excitement of previous years, with Apple Store employees applauding and high-fiving people as they entered. Inside waited the new iPhones, which feature the same external look but pack in new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive “3D Touch” display.

The inside of the Covent Garden store had already been updated for the new phones, with pictures on the wall and handsets waiting to try on tables around the store. According to iFixit, the iPhone 6S’ battery is indeed smaller than the one in iPhone 6 (1715mAh vs. 1810mAh), likely due to the new taptic engine, located below the battery. As far as repairability goes, the new iPhone is in line with the last year’s model — it’s relatively easy to remove the display and access the battery, provided you have the tools that can handle Apple’s proprietary Pentalobe screws.
