Ford Super Duty Trucks to Have Aluminum Body Panels in 2017.

Ford Super Duty trucks will be sold with a new aluminum body, like their smaller sibling the F-150, starting next fall. Ford first switched to an aluminum body for its current F-Series models and is doubling down on that bet with the debut of the 2017 F-Series Super Duty pickup. “While Super Duty is America’s best-selling heavy-duty truck, we never take our leadership for granted,” said Raj Nair, chief technical officer for Ford. “Our team is using relentless innovation in materials, technology and Built Ford Tough engineering.” The switchover to an aluminum body for the current models required additional downtime at two factories, but Ford F -0.22% officials say that won’t be necessary for the Super Duty model.

In addition, the heavy-duty pickup will be available when it arrives next fall with a camera that can be mounted on the trailer to help with backing up. The company did not release horsepower or torque figures for the engine, but said they will provide the “highest combination of horsepower and torque ever.” The stiff new chassis on the truck – a fully boxed frame formed mostly from high-strength steel – will have more than 24 times the torsional rigidity as the previous truck.
