Android + Chrone = New Single Operating System.

Engineers have been laboring at the project for two years, and could have an early version as soon as next year – though the company doesn’t plan to unveil its new version of Android until 2017. Google has denied the veracity of a report that states the company will fold its Chrome OS for laptops and desktop computers into its Android mobile operating. Chrome OS was Google’s effort to bring the Web and browser-centric experience to more devices, encouraging users to access all software and apps through its Chrome browser on cheap, stripped-down laptops. The Wall Street Journal reported that Google plans to merge the two operating systems into one single system in 2017, used across smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers. Google’s smartphones and tablets run Android, while its Chromebooks run Chrome OS, a cut-down version of Linux that runs the company’s Chrome browser relying on web apps and a few select Android apps.

Soon after the report in the WSJ, Google’s new senior vice president for Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast, Hiroshi Lockheimer, said the company is still “very committed” to Chrome OS as there is a “ton of momentum for Chromebooks”. If the move goes according to plan, Android will function better in large screen systems as it will use Chrome OS’ thin client applications instead of going for a separate re-design. That should help Google woo more outside developers who want to write apps once and have them work on as many gadgets as possible, with little modification. Google’s launch of an Android tablet, the Pixel C, which has a heavy focus on productivity with a keyboard accessory that turns it into a laptop analogue also saw speculation that Google would phase out Chrome OS.

The Chrome OS operating system has found success in schools running on low-cost but capable laptops for which its apparent immunity to malware and simple setup and management are suited.
