Google Wallet Now Lets You Send Money Through a Phone Number.

Google Wallet, the former Google payment app that is now some sort of hybrid friend-to-friend payment service, added a new feature today that should make sending money to others easier than ever. You can download the new version of the app from Google Play and Apple’s App Store (it’s rolling out “in the next few days,” so don’t fret if you don’t see it yet). Instead it has become an app in which users will be able to send money to each other, so for example if you wanted to pay a friend back for dinner the other night, or if you’re buying something online and meeting the seller in person, Google Wallet can facilitate those payments.

When you send money using a phone number, the person will get a text message with a secure link at which they can enter their debit card and have the money will be transferred to it. In a blog post today on Google Commerce, the company announced their app’s new update enables you to make a payment to someone even if the only information you have about them is their phone number. The updated Google Wallet should already be available in the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store so head on over to get the update if you haven’t done so already.
