ArenaNet Unveils Guild Wars 2 Expansion, Heart of Thorns.

Get excited, Guild Wars 2 players. Instead, ArenaNet will be introducing specialisations which unlock weapons that may have previously been unavailable to professions along with new traits, skills, and “unique mechanics”. That’s a bit different of a treatment than the “level creep” you see in most major MMOs, where expansions typically allow a player to tack on anywhere from 5 to 10 or so extra levels on top of their maxed-out characters—giving those with the game’s expansion quite a boost over those who don’t purchase it, depending on how the game’s developer treats those situations. Instead, ArenaNet plans to handle character progression by giving players access to new “masteries” system, which will allow them to tap into new skills and talents as they push through new quests within the game’s Maguum Jungle.

Heart of Throns will take place in the The Heart of Maguuma, taking players threw three biomes, moving from the roots of it’s trees to the very top. One’s progression in the Masteries system is completely account-based, which means that you won’t have to go through and redo all the adventures and tasks with all of your separate characters. A new mode for PvP mode called Stronghold is also being added where players will have to storm the enemy gates, and World vs World is getting a new Borderlands map. “We know many fans have been waiting for this moment, for us to say this one single phrase – an expansion is coming for Guild Wars 2,” said Colin Johanson. “We wanted to go well beyond just announcing that an expansion is coming and then let our fans guess as to what it would bring, and so we waited until we could tell them every single feature that we think sets it apart. This means that gear and weapons that players have grinded for previously won’t become obsolete when the expansion does come out (no date announced yet). ArenaNet is also packing in a brand-new profession that players can pick for their characters—though not much is known right now about just what, exactly, a “Revenant” will be within the game. “Channel legendary powers to slaughter foes and unleash chaos on the battlefield with our brand new profession: the revenant.

Explore new training opportunities for your character beyond level 80 and master abilities like hang gliding in the jungle, tearing the bark off of heavily armored Mordrem, or building new collections that earn precursors to a legendary weapon. Other highlights in Heart of Thorns include a new WvW map for players to battle on, a new PvP “Stronghold” mode, and the premiere of Guild Halls for the game’s many guilds to buy and/or outfit.

Map objectives will be more important than ever before, as they’ll unlock new strategies, tactics, and play mechanics that you’ll want to use to your world’s advantage!
