HBO Now comes to Verizon’s internet customers

HBO NOW(SM) Available Today To Verizon Broadband Customers.

On Tuesday, HBO and Verizon announced a new partnership allowing Verizon broadband customers to sign up for the Internet-only HBO Now service, starting immediately.HBO today announced its second deal with a pay TV provider, in this case Verizon*, to make its over-the-top streaming service HBO NOW available to broadband customers who don’t have a cable TV subscription. HBO NOW is immediately available to all Verizon standalone broadband customers, including FiOS and high-speed internet customers, for a 30-day free trial. That means HBO NOW will be available to Verizon DSL customers, FiOS broadband customers, and soon, the company’s 100 million Verizon Wireless customers, too.

Verizon can also be able to sell HBO Now directly to wireless customers, although there’s no reference to how that process will work on either the HBO Now site or Verizon Wireless site. Verizon joins Cablevision on the list of HBO’s traditional partners that have bought the network’s somewhat controversial pitch that the companies can target cord-cutters together by bundling HBO Now with distributors’ broadband packages. After the introductory period ends, subscribers would pay $14.99 per month to keep the Internet-only service, which offers instant access to the usual HBO content, including series like “Game of Thrones” and hundreds of movies and sports and comedy specials.

Those averse to the pay-TV bundle also have the option to subscribe to HBO Now through an array of digital distributors, including Apple, Amazon and Google’s Android. Verizon’s decision to resell the service makes sense in light of the company’s mobile video ambitions, even though other cable and satellite TV operators may have initially hesitated to give their pay TV customers a reason to cancel their bigger, pricey TV bundles in favor of more affordable internet-only packages where they can watch streaming content like Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, and HBO NOW, among other things. Confusingly, HBO has also agreed to be part of Verizon’s forthcoming online video platform, though not in any way as formal as attaching HBO Now to it. But the tide is turning when it comes to how consumers engage with television – people are watching on multiple devices, watching video on demand, and binging their way through series and movies without commercial interruptions.

FiOS TV customers don’t get the option of subscribing to HBO Now; Verizon will only let them buy proper HBO (which of course includes access to HBO Go), so there’s no way to leave HBO off your cable bill and buy it stand-alone — not that doing so would make a ton of sense anyway. See your shows, your movies, your way, on HBO NOW, including the recent seasons of Game of Thrones®, Silicon Valley®, Veep® and Last Week Tonight With John OliverSM as well as other current uncensored programming like Girls®, The Leftovers®, The Jinx and Going Clear. HBO NOW also features every episode of every season of HBO classics worth seeing again like The Sopranos®, Sex and the City®, True Blood®, The Wire® and Deadwood®. On the site, Variety found there were other still-unannounced partners listed, such as Victorious, GoPro and Vevo, and the site referenced Fox, AMC and NFL as well. (Verizon told Variety that not all the names on the website were representative of done deals.) It will also make the service more competitive with other newer offerings, like Comcast’s soon-to-launch service called Stream, which includes live TV from broadcast networks along with the option for HBO. Verizon has yet to announce a launch date for Go90, though Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said on this an earnings call that it will debut in the “late summer.”
