HP Launches Version 2.0 Of Its Helion OpenStack Platform
HP Helion OpenStack 2.0 Delivers a Production Ready, Enterprise Grade Cloud Platform.
Today at OpenStack Summit Tokyo 2015, HP (NYSE: HPQ) announced the availability of HP Helion OpenStack® 2.0, a production ready, open source based cloud platform designed to meet enterprise requirements. It’s no secret that HP is about to sunset its public cloud business and that it has conceded that side of its business to the likes of AWS, Microsoft and Google.
TOKYO, Oct. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ – As a Gold Member of the OpenStack Foundation, Huawei participated in the 2015 OpenStack Summit held in Tokyo during October 27-30, 2015. As organizations strive for the right mix of traditional IT and private cloud technology to run their mission-critical applications and protect sensitive data, many are turning to the flexibility and economics of the OpenStack® project. During this conference for developers, users, and administrators of OpenStack Cloud Software, Huawei’s engineers, together with experts from all over the globe, discussed how to promote OpenStack development and innovation, as well as how to build a cloud computing industry chain. HP Helion OpenStack 2.0 offers an enterprise grade cloud platform, adding new features to address organizations’ lifecycle management and security challenges, including: HP Helion OpenStack 2.0 also enables customers to create and manage software defined networks (SDN) in a distributed, multi-datacenter environment through integration with HP Distributed Cloud Networking (DCN) and Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform.
When it comes to private clouds, OpenStack is currently the only real option and with Helion OpenStack, HP has offered its own OpenStack platform for about a year now. With the open and innovative attributes of OpenStack, developers hope to use it to deploy application scenarios such as virtualization, private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud, desktop cloud, and network function virtualization infrastructure for customers, cloudifying their key services and facilitating continuous production innovation.
During the four-day summit, experts from Huawei took part in 20 speeches to present Huawei’s OpenStack-based FusionSphere cloud operating system and to share its innovative contributions to the OpenStack community, attracting hundreds of attendees. Huawei also organized over 10 exchange activities among customers, analysts, and partners, helping to publicize Huawei’s important role in the cloud computing field. HP Helion Professional Services has capabilities that span the entire cloud lifecycle, from advice and strategy, to transformation, implementation and management. It means we can build the best private cloud for our customers and make sure that we can really accelerate our hybrid management and the hybrid nature of our cloud,” he said.
Since 2010, OpenStack has become the most influential open source cloud computing project and has gained recognition from across the industry for its open and advanced architecture, efficient community development, and smart deployment mode. It’s true that for many organizations, like startups and Web 2.0 companies in which core IP is based on greenfield software or mobile applications, a public cloud strategy makes the most business sense. But for most organizations, especially enterprises that have existing or brownfield development, a private or hybrid cloud approach is more appropriate.
While the OpenStack project is already one release ahead of HP (with the release of Liberty earlier this month), it’s standard procedure in the OpenStack world to be somewhat conservative with adopting new releases. As Interrante told me, HP’s team takes the vanilla OpenStack release and then curates it, sets sane defaults for the configuration, and hardens the security of the platform against internal and external attacks.
Furthermore, they’re ensuring that organizations that have a private cloud strategy based on OpenStack will have a more seamless on-ramp to Google’s public cloud, thereby positioning themselves to capture that hybrid cloud business. Huawei unveiled its open source Astro project (Spark SQL on HBase package project) in August 2015, which will significantly encourage the promotion of Spark in the industry. For example, VMware unveiled VMware Integrated OpenStack at VMworld 2014 as a way to give VMware admins a simple way to manage OpenStack while giving developers freedom from vendor lock-in.
The concept of open source is employed in the FusionSphere 6.0 components, architecture, and ecosystem, allowing customers to have more choices in software. With the broadest technology portfolio spanning printing, personal systems, software, services and IT infrastructure, HP delivers solutions for customers’ most complex challenges in every region of the world. Using the new Helion Lifecycle Management service, for example, they can create their cloud layouts and then replay these installs with small tweaks as necessary.
If such risks or uncertainties materialize or such assumptions prove incorrect, the results of HP and its consolidated subsidiaries could differ materially from those expressed or implied by such forward-looking statements and assumptions. HP says it currently has 210 engineers who are contributing to OpenStack, including eight Project Team Leads (who lead the development of OpenStack’s various sub-projects) and three members of the project’s Technical Committee. Deeper support within OpenStack for container technologies like Kubernetes is yet another challenge to the primacy of virtual machines (VMs) supporting the emerging generation of cloud applications.
All statements other than statements of historical fact are statements that could be deemed forward-looking statements, including but not limited to statements of the plans, strategies and objectives of HP for future operations, including the separation transaction; the future performance of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and HP Inc. if the separation is completed; any statements concerning expected development, performance, market share or competitive performance relating to products and services; any statements regarding anticipated operational and financial results; any statements of expectation or belief; and any statements of assumptions underlying any of the foregoing. With the backing of a technology powerhouse like Google, who is actively contributing to container integration within OpenStack, OpenStack has more of a chance to differentiate from pure VM-based technology platforms like VMWare. Once Huawei overcomes these issues, it will share its experience with the community in the spirit of open source.” Based on the FusionSphere, FusionInsight, and FusionStage software platforms, Huawei provides public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud solutions with unified architecture.
Support for containers will also help bolster OpenStack’s general strategy of creating a strong contributing community and supporting incumbent vendors. Huawei has deployed 255 cloud data centers and more than 700,000 virtual machines across the globe, and the company’s cloud computing products provide services for more than 1,000 customers in over 84 countries, covering industries and sectors including government, public utilities, telecommunications, energy, and finance. The global OpenStack market is expected to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 31 percent between 2015 and 2019, according to a 2015 Technavio report.
Driven by customer-centric innovation and open partnerships, Huawei has established an end-to-end ICT solutions portfolio that gives customers competitive advantages in telecom and enterprise networks, devices and cloud computing.
