HTC ‘Aero’ leak shows iPhone-like colors, mid-range power.

The HTC One A9 will be available in six colours – acid gold, opal silver, deep garnet, carbon grey, rose gold and cast iron – according to press renders.HTC is preparing a new mid-range phone that’s set to launch before the end of the year, known as the One A9 (codenamed “Aero”), and thanks to the latest leak from @evleaks we’re seeing what this phone will look like for the first time.

If he’s right, it’s not the high-end, 10-core model we were expecting, but rather a mid-ranger aimed at style-conscious types, with no less than six color options. The skeptical among us might notice that it vaguely resembles an iPhone 6s, and in fact has three color choices that are nigh-on identical to Apple’s latest handsets (rose gold, carbon gray and silver). HTC’s One A9, which is also being called Aero, will reportedly come with a super slim metal design with thin bands along the back for its antennas, as new leaked images show. That said, it should serve its purpose with a decent-sounding 13-megapixel backside illuminated, optically stabilized camera (4-megapixel selfie cam), fingerprint sensor and MicroSD card expansion.

HTC CEO Cher Wang, who took over for former chief executive Peter Chou in March, promised a new HTC flagship later this year to help the Taiwanese manufacturer revive its struggling sales amid layoffs and high-level talent departures. HTC announced plans in August to cut 15 percent of its worldwide workforce as it tries to increase sales while dabbling in new markets like virtual reality. The device reportedly packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC (a minor upgrade on the existing octa-core Snapdragon 615), 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of expandable storage, plus a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display. In my humble opinion, this is a desperate measure and could help HTC only with momentary increases in sales, but on the long run, it won’t help the company differentiate itself from the rest. Though the company’s One line of devices have received generally solid marks from critics, they’ve failed to reach the level of the success needed to pull HTC out of its financial rut, putting weighty expectations on the Aero and its Cupertino-esque design.

The Rose Gold variant HTC offers is a bit different though — it looks more like the gold iPhone than the pink Rose Gold colour Apple recently introduced. According to @evleaks, HTC will release the A9 in November, so it will only be a few months until we see the company’s iPhone-styled phone in the flesh. You’ll get to keep your current user name (as long as it doesn’t contain invalid characters, in which case you’ll have to go through a few extra steps to make the transfer), and all your old comments will eventually (not immediately) migrate with you.
