Facebook’s Instagram hits 400 million users.

Instagram announced the milestone with a blog post Tuesday, which also revealed that the service’s users share more than 80 million photos every single day. The photo-sharing service added that it’s now truly global: more than 75% of its users today are based outside the U.S., and more than half of the last 100 million to sign up are in Europe and Asia. Facebook also owns two other of the world’s most popular apps: WhatsApp, which it bought for billions and has 900 million users, and its homegrown app, Facebook Messenger, which has 700 million. As it expands, the photo-sharing application has started to ramp up its advertising business, taking advantage of Facebook’s network of tools and marketers to increase its offerings and global reach.

Though Instagram’s advertising business is in its infancy, research firm eMarketer expects Instagram to bring in $595 million in global mobile advertising revenue this year, $1.48 billion in 2016 and $2.81 billion in 2017, when it’s expected to generate more than 10% of Facebook’s ad revenue. Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call that the company is not yet ready to turn on the moneymaking spigot with Messenger or WhatsApp. Though it’s simply updating investors on Instagram’s latest user count, Facebook is likely hoping to send the subtle message to investors that it’s working hard at turning Instagram into a cash cow. Yes, it’s no mistake that the team wanted to let all of us know that it’s growing internationally, the key to grabbing its “next 400M.” It’d be sure nice to know what the splits are on iOS vs. Instagram’s gotten several new features and updates in recent months, including improvements to its private messaging to compete with Twitter’s, and that’s paying off in the form of new users.

This is good news for advertisers, who are starting to fill up the network with both photos and video commercials. …Instagram can rest easy knowing it captured lightning in a bottle.
