Apple plans to unveil three iPhones this year: Report.

Alongside an iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 Plus S phablet, the tech company is reportedly going to unveil an affordable iPhone 6C as part of the 2015 refresh cycle. Some dismiss the iPhone 5C as Apple’s one failure with an iPhone, with much of the criticism aimed at the phone focusing on the flawed perception that C would stand for “cheap” and Apple does not do cheap. According to the report, the 6C will be have a 4-inch (10.1cm) screen, making it significantly smaller than the 4.7-inch (11.9cm) iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch (14cm) iPhone 6. Digitimes also claims that despite lower specifications, the new handset, expected to be unveiled in September, will have a fingerprint scanner and will support the Apple Pay digital payments platform.

Whatever models Apple does realise, it is expected that the next generation of iPhones will have the Force Touch technology used in the upcoming Apple Watch that can detect the difference between a light touch and a firmer finger press. Renewing it gives customers a cheaper entry point to the range and it continues the presence of a 4-inch model, which some owners are wedded to… Going down this route makes the same mistake as so many Android handset makers (Sony aside): treating small phones as second class phones. An earlier report suggests that Apple has secured a new patent which will give future iPhones the ability to shoot even better images and deliver high-quality colours.

According to Apple Insider, the company has been a granted a patent for a ‘digital camera with light splitter’ which will allow Apple to embed a three-sensor prism-based camera module within the chassis of a thin wireless device, like the iPhone. This technology implemented in phones would boost its camera quality and offer a much better result in terms of colour, especially in low-light conditions. Yes smaller phones fit smaller batteries, but they also fit smaller displays and it is the display which remains the biggest energy drain on any device.

A 4-inch iPhone 6 requires less materials and a smaller battery than larger models, but if it were given the same premium build materials there is no reason it should not be priced in the same bracket as the standard iPhone 6.
