LG aims for wider market share with flagship G4 launch.

South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc is optimistic that it could capture 5 percent of the Taiwanese smartphone market by sales this quarter after its flagship G4 phone hits the market next month. “We aim to sell between 250,000 and 300,000 units of G4 within a year in Taiwan,” LG Taiwan CEO and president Jason Lee said on the sidelines of the G4’s launch in Taipei yesteday. Although the G4 was launched a few months later than its peers — such as HTC Corp’s (宏達電) One M9 and Samsung Electronics Co’s S6 and S6 Edge — LG expects its annual phone shipments to Taiwan to grow by 30 percent this year.

LG Taiwan mobile business official Eason Shao (邵維君) said the 5.5-inch curved display and impressive camera performance of the flagship phone, which is priced at NT$20,900 (US$682), would attract “heavy” smartphone users. The G4 features a 16-megapixel front camera with F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization function, making it easier to shoot photographs in a low-light environment, Shao said. LG will continue with its dual-flagship strategy this year, with plans to launch a second flagship model before the end of this year to attract different types of consumers, he said. The G4c goes the opposite direction with the screen, shrinking the display to five inches (it’s still only 720p), which now is on the small end of Android screen sizes.

The story behind the story: LG, much like other Android handset makers, tends to release a variety of budget-friendly models alongside its top-of-the-line phones.
