LG Electronics Makes Laptop Debut In U.S. With Windows 10 ‘Gram’ Series.

The LG Gram weighs just 2.19 pounds, yet manages either a 13- or 14-inch 1080p IPS display. LG’s laptops are a common sight around the world, but you wouldn’t know it in the US when the company hasn’t officially brought its portables to the country.ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Sept. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ – LG Electronics USA announced a U.S. market first: the launch of LG’s line of premium lightweight laptops – LG gram series. The Gram-series Windows 10 laptops each weigh 2.16 pounds, are priced from $899 to $1,399 for 13- and 14-inch models, and are available at Microsoft stores across the country and at MicrosoftStore.com and Amazon.com. Better known to US consumers for its TVs, home appliances, and smartphones, LG is debuting its premium LG Gram Ultra PCs to an American audience, confident that it can capitalize on the momentum of Windows 10.

They’re still running 5th-generation Core processors, but they’re otherwise no slouches — they earn their name through an extremely light 980g (2.16lbs) body that makes many smaller laptops seem portly by comparison. The main selling points of the Gram don’t actually have much to do with Microsoft’s new operating system — there’s no touchscreen option or RealSense camera for Windows Hello. The 14-inch Gram 14, available in two versions, is among the lightest laptops in the 14-inch category, weighing only 2.16 pounds, or less than the MacBook Air, the company said.

The body is made of carbon-lithium and carbon-magnesium, both used in spacecraft and race cars, to be durable while maintaining light weight, the company added. Although LG has a few laptops, like the UltraPC line, outside the states, the Gram is the first line for the U.S., and as a bonus, it’s coming as a Microsoft “Signature Series” meaning no bloat whatsoever—just pure Windows 10. All are Microsoft Signature Edition laptops, which are free of installed “junkware,” feature performance tuning, and come with “fully” virus-protected system, LG said.

With that said, you may want to try one first-hand first, or check reviews from other regions — The Verge notes that the construction is “flimsy” next to a MacBook Air, and it doesn’t last nearly as long on battery. To achieve that impressively minuscule amount of Lbs, LG had to make a few design sacrifices—the biggest being the plastic shell all the hardware is incased in. The name Gram is derived from the LG computer’s weight, which at less than a kilogram (980 grams / 2.16 pounds) is lighter than even the 11-inch MacBook Air.

The company’s instant-boot feature starts up the operating system as soon as the user opens the display, whether the computer had been powered off or in sleep/hibernation mode. After the shock of how light this laptop is fades away, you then start to notice the creaking plastic—from the keyboard to the screen bezel—and a few other missing features, like a backlit keys or an SD card reader. LG’s pricing is also closely matched to compete with Apple’s range, starting at $899 for the 13-inch Gram with an Intel Core i5 processor, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. But as already mentioned, LG may not be known for laptops but their displays are some of the best in the world, and that’s true with the Gram series. The FullHD displays feature 16:9 aspect ratio, in-plane switching (IPS) technology, and a Reader Mode that reduces blue light for more comfortable reading over extended periods of time.

Its arrival could be welcome news for high-end laptop buyers, as devices like Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 are helping to establish Windows PCs as more than just budget MacBook alternatives. It supports the latest standards for connectivity, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology, along with extra ports for USB 3.0, a micro-USB and micro-SD slot. Amazon will also be selling LG’s machines from today, with the two 14-inch models coming in at $999 for the base Core i5 plus 128GB spec, or $1,399 for an upgraded Core i7 and 256GB combination.

You’ll get to keep your current user name (as long as it doesn’t contain invalid characters, in which case you’ll have to go through a few extra steps to make the transfer), and all your old comments will eventually (not immediately) migrate with you. That makes for rather underwhelming battery life, as my initial experience with the Core i7 Gram has shown it to last for markedly less than its advertised 7.5 hours, which in itself is a comparatively low number nowadays. The only real downside with these impressive specs is that they’re not the newly released Skylake processors but are instead Intel’s 5th generation Broadwell chips. LG gram series also offers advanced sound quality thanks to its built-in Digital-to-Analog converter (DAC), which allows users to experience hi-fi quality sound with less noise and distortion. LG Electronics, a proud 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, sells a range of stylish and innovative home entertainment products, mobile phones, home appliances, commercial displays, air conditioning systems and solar energy solutions in the United States, all under LG’s “Life’s Good” marketing theme www.lg.com.
