LG’s Urbane LTE Smartwatch Looks Great, But It’ll Cost About $600

LG G Watch Urbane with LTE launching in local markets soon for nearly $600.

South Korean electronics giant LG announced Thursday (via AndroidCentral) that it plans to release its SIM card equipped smartwatch, the Urbane LTE, in a little less than a month in its home country, with a price of 650,000 won. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, this smartwatch looks every bit as stylish as a traditional timepiece but includes the internals of LG’s earlier G Watch R.

The company teased that the Urbane would initially be available in local markets (its home country of South Korea) and that pricing information would be available closer to its launch date. When the LTE version of the LG G Watch Urbane goes on sale in the coming days, it’ll command a whopping 650,000 won which translates to about $590 USD.

Still, the price doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering the device’s slick design and SIM support, but it may be too expensive for most shoppers. To put that into perspective, the new Pebble Time will be available for $179, Motorola’s Moto 360 starts at $249 and the upcoming Apple Watch starts at $349.

There’s still no word on when or if the Watch Urbane LTE will arrive in the U.S., though you’ll eventually be able to get your hands on the non-LTE version that runs Android Wear from AT&T. AT&T has confirmed it’ll be bringing the non-LTE variant to the US although pricing information and an exact launch date haven’t been revealed yet. But there’s one important detail that may hurt its overall value: It’s running a new, proprietary operating system, about which we know next to nothing. Maybe the “LG Wearable Platform operating system” will catch on with developers and tons of apps are on their way—but it hasn’t made much noise so far, making it unlikely those apps will be around at launch.
