Microsoft Bridging The Gap Between Phones In The Wild And Windows 10.

If you have a Nokia Lumia smartphone, your chances of running the Windows 10 Preview are looking up: According to Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, the company is set to open up Windows 10 Preview builds to a broader range of phones. In a blog post released on Friday, software giant Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group has revealed that the forthcoming test build of the company’s new Windows 10 operating system will be available on a wide range of Lumia smartphones. The reasons for this limited rollout were technical—Microsoft had to select phones with an OS partition large enough to handle Windows 10 until it had finished a partition-resizing feature known as Partition Stitching. Microsoft’s disclosure of plans related to a huge expansion of Windows 10 on Lumia handsets is highly noteworthy, especially since the company’s February-released Windows 10 Technical Preview was supported by only a few Lumia smartphones, including the Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730, and 830.

Partition Stitching is now ready to rock, according to Microsoft, so the Windows development team was able to expand the preview to include support for additional Lumia devices. Microsoft stresses that this is a “preliminary” list and is subject to change: The company may add or remove models from the compatibility list as it fixes bugs—or finds new ones. After receiving feedbacks, the company’s Windows Insider program head Gabe Aul said they had successfully tested the partition stitching feature code last week. The first Windows 10 build for smartphones will bring Microsoft products like Office apps, OneDrive cloud storage, tightly-integrated search engine Bing, and more importantly, the new web browser which would replace the clunky Internet Explorer. Following its biggest rival, Google, Belfiore said the new system will add improvements to voice to text, the notification center it calls “Action Center” — and additional phone personalization.
