With the launch of Windows 10 upon us, Microsoft is making good on its promise from earlier this year: Windows 10 users can now stream gameplay footage from Xbox One. Microsoft has a streaming music service, too — though it was mostly overlooked as attention turned to Apple’s entry into a business crowded with Spotify, Google Play and others. Microsoft also said it planned several feature updates to the Xbox app over the next few days, including the ability for the app to mine your old PC games and add them to your game collection. As the name suggests, game streaming relays game play from Microsoft’s Xbox One console to a connected PC, allowing a gamer to play Forza Horizon in the family room, for example, while other family members watch Monday Night Football on the living-room TV. In a blog post yesterday, Xbox’s Larry Hryb elaborated a bit more on the features of the new Xbox app for Windows 10, which include a party chat mode that lets you talk with your streaming buddies inside or outside of a game, and new options for sharing local game clips and screenshots.

Along with the new name, Microsoft promises redesigned menus and other new features when it releases Groove with Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system later this month. 2. Why this matters: There’s two ways of looking at this: On the one hand, it ties Microsoft’s ecosystem together, giving bonuses for owning various sets of Microsoft gear, including the Xbox One and a Windows 10 PC. This is a move that will surely bring some much needed life to the dying console business, but something that is definitely a challenge to compete with in the big picture. As with Apple and Google, Microsoft also offers the option to upload songs you own to the Internet, through Microsoft’s OneDrive storage service, for playback on other devices.

This is all that is required to connect the two devices, and something that really will help bolster the overall business that has definitely been struggling in recent years. Obviously, we can expect to see some changes come our way – but in the short-term, this means really good things for Microsoft, and Xbox, which have both struggled to find their groove to this point. Although many consider gaming in the console form to be in its golden years – this is something that will definitely stand to be improved on in the coming years – if the space is going to survive the upcoming threats that could derail it completely.
