Microsoft Builds Its First Laptop, the Surface Book.

Microsoft Corp unveiled on Tuesday its first laptop, a line of Lumia smartphones, a new Surface Pro tablet and an updated version of its wearable fitness tracker, Microsoft Band, all running on Windows 10, its latest operating system. Windows 10, launched in July, is part of Microsoft’s push to win a bigger share of the market for tablets and smartphones, now dominated by Apple Inc and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. The Surface Book is “the ultimate laptop,” said Panos Panay, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for devices. “Ounce for ounce, pound for pound, this is the fastest 13-inch laptop ever made.” Mr.

Panay didn’t go deep into details about the hardware powering the $1,499-and-up Surface Book, but he made the bold claim that Microsoft’s laptop will be twice as fast as Apple’s top-of-the-line MacBook Pro laptop. The Lumia 950 and 950XL will have starting prices of US$549 and US$649 respectively when they go on sale in November, while the Lumia 550 will cost US$139 when it becomes available in December. Panay said that the motivation behind Microsoft making a laptop was centered around offering the best typing experience. “The typing experience on this product is perfect,” Mr. Panay said. “This product is about reinventing categories.” Surface Book features a 13.5-inch display, packed with 6 million pixels, a 5-point multi-touch “precision” glass trackpad and the Surface’s signature magnesium body. The feature allows users to scan their face, iris or fingerprints to verify their identity and give them access to Windows phones, laptops and personal computers.

Microsoft also introduced a Surface Pen, which has year-long battery life, 1,024 pressure points and comes in five colors with inter-changeable pen tips. With the pending arrival of the Apple iPad Pro, a large-screen tablet outfitted with a keyboard and stylus, Microsoft is looking prophetic these days. Unlike its predecessor, Microsoft’s entry product in the wearable technology market a year ago, the new Band has a curved display, which uses the Corning Gorilla glass 3, and has a barometer sensor to track elevation.

Earlier, Microsoft demonstrated its upcoming HoloLens virtual-reality device by showing a “mixed reality” game that combines animation with real-world objects. Instead, he compared the Surface Pro 4 to the hugely popular MacBook Air, claiming that Microsoft’s new tablet will be 50% faster than Apple’s entry-level laptop. Its updated Surface Pen will have 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity with a digital eraser on top, and the battery life for the pen will last a year, Panay said.
