Microsoft’s new Windows 10 beta build for phones fixes pesky upgrade bug

Microsoft offers amnesty of sorts to pirates of older Windows software.

Perhaps the biggest addition in Build 10576, which follows Build 10565, is media casting in the Microsoft Edge browser — Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Cast extension for Chrome.Microsoft said Thursday that it will run an “experiment” to offer a path for those users who have either pirated or purchased an unlicensed copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to download a licensed copy from Microsoft itself, or to use a code from a third-party reseller. The feature works with any Miracast and DLNA device, according to a blog post on the news from Gabe Aul, vice president of engineering systems in Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group.

The company Thursday announced that some users of the operating system’s previous two versions may see the new software downloaded automatically early next year, depending on their update settings. It’s unclear how much software in the world is pirated—the Business Software Alliance claimed that in 2010 four out of ten software programs installed around the world were illegally copied—but Microsoft’s free upgrade to Windows 10 has surely cut into that. With Windows 10, which Microsoft released as a free update advertised to most existing Windows users, some users have worried that the Redmond company would make the software a compulsory upgrade, or ultimately charge a subscription fee. Myerson said that one unexpected aspect of the Windows 10 upgrade process was discovering how many pirates were upgrading to Windows 10—and then turning around and purchasing a valid license from Microsoft. Cast your music from Pandora: Login to Pandora in Microsoft Edge to get to your music and click on the “…” menu and the top left, and select “Cast media to device” and select the Miracast or DLNA device you want to cast to.

Microsoft relied upon the tried-and-true tactic of trying to scare users straight—which, to be fair, isn’t necessarily wrong. “The best Windows is genuine Windows,” Microsoft said in a statement. “Non-genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft, not properly licensed, nor supported by Microsoft or our trusted partners. The company seems to want to find a way of bringing in users of pirated Windows versions and give them an opportunity to simply buy a legal Windows key and become a user of genuine Windows 10. Other updates include performance improvements for nested virtualization in Hyper-V Containers, improved memory usage for the Xbox app in certain scenarios, and the temporary removal of the VP9 video codec. In the early days of Windows 10, we had mentioned why Microsoft should embark on such a move to push for aggressive adoption rates of its most important release till date. Finally, there’s better news for those who are keeping up with Windows updates: Microsoft has pledged to reveal more information about what’s actually in them, as it used to do.
