Microsoft Announces Surface 3, A Cheaper, Thinner, Slower Surface Pro 3.

Rather than the dumbed-down version of Microsoft’s operating system that its predecessors ran, it’s been imbued with full-fledged Windows 8.1 (with a free Windows 10 upgrade coming as soon as Microsoft can release it), thanks to Intel’s new x86-based Atom X7 processor.

Rather than utilizing Intel’s latest line of 5th generation core processors, the Surface 3 is equipped with Intel’s new Quad-core Atom TM x7-Z8700 processor, a CPU comparable in terms of power to what is set to be featured in Apple’s new Macbook, an 1.1GHz Intel Core M processor. The ability to run Windows apps and the versatile pen experience1 — great for taking notes or marking documents — make Surface 3 ideal for students, schools and anyone looking for a portable device to get things done. But unlike Apple’s upcoming Macbook refresh, the Surface Pro will not feature USB 3.0 Type-C connectivity, a strange decision considering the technology is cited as the future of USB.

Starting at just $499, Surface 3 packs performance and value into an elegant, lightweight design. “Surface 3 brings what customers love about Surface Pro 3 to more people, delivering the premium design and productivity of Surface in a more affordable device,” said Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Surface. “We’ve taken everything we learned making Surface Pro 3 and poured that innovation into this newest Surface. The three-position kickstand is ideal for using Surface 3 while working at a desk, sitting on a couch or holding in the palm of a hand as a natural writing surface. To help people get even more done, Surface 3 and Surface 3 (4G LTE) ship with full Windows 8.1 and can be upgraded to Windows 10 for free when available.5 They also come complete with a one-year subscription of Microsoft Office 365 Personal, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, plus OneDrive cloud storage.6 Full device specs are available here. Laboring under the presumption that the average laptop consumer is price sensitive — marginally sensitive to negative dollars as a percentage price delta between two competing devices — the move makes sense.

There’s an 8-megapixel camera on the back, which Microsoft swears people do actually use, and a 3.5-megapixel webcam on the front for video chats and checking your teeth. It supports the same pen input as the other Surface models, and works with all the Touch and Type Covers as well—there are even a few new colors, like a bright orange that may blind passersby when you use it.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services, devices and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. There are some big functional differences, obviously, especially considering the performance drop from the Surface Pro’s pro-level Intel Core processors down to the Atom line, which is very much designed with smartphones and tablets in mind. Microsoft has long had two Surface units on sale at any given point, formerly split between ‘Pro’ and not-Pro models, the former running Intel processors a full build of Windows while the latter ran a variant of Windows that has since been left behind.

Given that, and before I have had more than passing time with the hardware, I will register modest optimism in the Surface 3’s commercial viability.
