Microsoft unveils Xbox One Elite bundle

Microsoft Reveals ‘Lunar White’ Xbox One Controller.

The new console comes with a matte finish and a special hard drive that runs much faster than the previous one. Upgrading the Xbox One’s storage space became a non-issue when Microsoft added support for external hard drives a while back, but slipping a tiny hard drive inside the black box to reduce clutter and prune your power strip?Microsoft announced a pricey new Xbox One Elite Bundle Monday that’s geared to the most hardcore of gamers with a top of the line controller and hard drive. The press release doesn’t say what the size is of the SSD partition, but we’ve reached out to Microsoft for clarification and will update this story when they respond.

The new One isn’t the first to boast 1TB of storage – Microsoft officially announced a new iteration with a terabyte of storage at E3 – but this is the console’s first hybrid drive with that much space. That means that it “stores frequently-accessed files on a solid state partition” — putting the rest on a traditional spinning platter drive — to make it up to 20 per cent faster. Microsoft hasn’t identified who the drive manufacturer is, nor what percent of the drive’s total is solid state, nor what the drive’s technical ratings are (with solid state hybrid drives, performance can vary considerably). The Elite Controller, however, is definitely the draw for this bundle, since it adds new features like Hair Trigger Locks and stainless steel paddles in its design.

Lunar White will be a standard Xbox One controller and won’t boast the company’s Elite controller’s features but it will be exclusive to GameStop for US$65. Instead, it’s a mix between the two, containing a spinning disk similar to an HDD but also flash memory, which will allow many programs and functions to load faster. Microsoft says it will sell the system for $499 in the U.S. exclusively through GameStop and Microsoft Stores starting November 3 (GameStop’s annual expo runs this week, thus the announcement timing). According to the post, the device will come with Windows 10, which means it will only be out after Microsoft upgrades their current Metro-style interface to the shiny new iteration in November.
