Mirror’s Edge Catalyst delayed.

Announced during E3 of 2013, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is the sequel to the much beloved Mirror’s Edge, which was released in 2008 for last-gen consoles.Via Mirror’s Edge Catalyst‘s official website, DICE and Electronic Arts announce that the prequel to 2008’s original game is now delayed until May 2016. Developer DICE, which is also making Star Wars: Battlefront, posted a blog post that explains it needs more time to make the first-person parkour-action game as high quality of an experience as possible. “Years ago, we set out an ambitious vision for Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst,” producer Sara Jansson wrote in the blog. “Achieving that vision and delivering the best possible experience is equally inspiring and challenging. And it takes time.” Jansson explained that DICE will use the extra weeks of development to make Catalyst “deeper and more engaging.” That includes both in terms of the playground-like gameplay as well as the narrative.

The extra development time will be used to “make sure that when you step into the massive City of Glass and experience the rise of Faith, it’s as entertaining, impressive, and memorable as it can be”. The new title is neither a reboot or a prequel and DICE aims to deliver a story campaign that offers more information about the world and main character Faith. While the prequel will stick firmly to its free-running roots, it’s also being promoted as a departure from the inaugural installment in some respects.

The wait for a followup to Mirror’s Edge has been long, but better for it to take just a bit longer and be polished than to release early in a state of jank. Be that as it may, it’s important to note how difficult game development can be, and that deferring the launch day doesn’t necessarily mean the end result will a be poorly conceived mess. The delay to May also allows the title some separation from the sheer onslaught of games (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Far Cry Primal, Street Fighter V) that are all scheduled to launch in February.
