How to build your own ‘Netflix and chill’ button, according to Netflix.

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) — Netflix is unveiling a user-programmable button to set yourself up for a long night of binge watching, for those who take the “Netflix and chill” request literally. When you’re getting ready for an evening of Netflix binge-watching, there are a few things you need: the right lighting, takeout from your favorite restaurant, and your TV queued up to the streaming site.Netflix has published instructions to make a button that will order takeout, dim the lights, turn on the television, launch Netflix, and silence your phones. Users would need some basic programming skills, and Netflix has step-by-step instructions on its website so users can customize their buttons to link to apps and devices.

While rumors have been circulating about when Netflix would release the Switch to the public, the device is not readily available for purchase, but can be built. The hardware is able to silence your other devices by using its internet connection to activate your phone’s Do Not Disturb feature, but it currently only works with Android. Their button is powered by a Particle Core microcontroller, a smart TV with a built-in Netflix app, a lithium-ion polymer battery that connects via Micro USB, and a custom enclosure (an E-stop button is the easier option for people who hated shop class and don’t know a 3D printer from a laser printer). Other highlights include the ability to preset it to call in your favorite delivery order to your location and connection to control lighting throughout your house. Netflix has marketed the button to be completely custom-made, featuring a “Make It” section on the website dedicated to changing its capabilities to fit your marathon watching needs.

This isn’t the simplest project, but that’s part of its mystique What better way to impress your Netflix and Chillee than pressing a single, handmade button that turns your living room into a Grace and Frankie marathon for two. It also opens new opportunities to upgrade your home: The official instructions are specific to Philips Hue smart LED lightbulbs, though other brands will work. The one-tap switch concept isn’t exactly new: Amazon in March launched the Dash Button, which offers a simple way to re-order things like paper towels, laundry detergent, coffee, and water.
