New beta build of Windows 10 enhances Microsoft Edge

Microsoft offers amnesty of sorts to pirates of older Windows software.

The company Thursday announced that some users of the operating system’s previous two versions may see the new software downloaded automatically early next year, depending on their update settings.Perhaps the biggest addition in Build 10576, which follows Build 10565, is media casting in the Microsoft Edge browser — Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Cast extension for Chrome.

Microsoft said Thursday that it will run an “experiment” to offer a path for those users who have either pirated or purchased an unlicensed copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to download a licensed copy from Microsoft itself, or to use a code from a third-party reseller. The feature works with any Miracast and DLNA device, according to a blog post on the news from Gabe Aul, vice president of engineering systems in Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group. And of course, if you choose to upgrade (our recommendation!), then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don’t love it.” This change — which can result in automatic downloads — should help Microsoft boost Windows 10 adoption above the “more than 110 million devices” level it is at now and get it closer to the company’s goal of 1 billion devices. Microsoft has previously made PCs automatically download Windows 10 in order to speed up installation — although you can prevent that from happening. With Windows 10, which Microsoft released as a free update advertised to most existing Windows users, some users have worried that the Redmond company would make the software a compulsory upgrade, or ultimately charge a subscription fee.

It’s unclear how much software in the world is pirated—the Business Software Alliance claimed that in 2010 four out of ten software programs installed around the world were illegally copied—but Microsoft’s free upgrade to Windows 10 has surely cut into that. Windows 10 will automatically download and start the upgrade process, depending on your Windows Update settings, but you can opt out and not receive nagging prompts to update. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users on a metered connection will have to turn off automatic updates to prevent the Windows 10 installer from downloading automatically.

Cast your music from Pandora: Login to Pandora in Microsoft Edge to get to your music and click on the “…” menu and the top left, and select “Cast media to device” and select the Miracast or DLNA device you want to cast to. Microsoft relied upon the tried-and-true tactic of trying to scare users straight—which, to be fair, isn’t necessarily wrong. “The best Windows is genuine Windows,” Microsoft said in a statement. “Non-genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft, not properly licensed, nor supported by Microsoft or our trusted partners. Other updates include performance improvements for nested virtualization in Hyper-V Containers, improved memory usage for the Xbox app in certain scenarios, and the temporary removal of the VP9 video codec. Finally, there’s better news for those who are keeping up with Windows updates: Microsoft has pledged to reveal more information about what’s actually in them, as it used to do. Microsoft Corporation is a public multinational corporation headquartered in Redmond, Washington, USA that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through … read more »
