Android chief pledges new emoji are on the way.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, the senior vice president for Android, Chrome OS, and Chromecast, took to Twitter to pledge that Google will catch up with all those missing icons your iPhone friends get to use.

Earlier this week Apple debuted iOS 9.1 with over 150 new emoji for iPhone owners, but it looks like Android users will soon be able to enjoy the same treat. This week iOS received a huge update and millions of iPhone users were happy to learn that they now have over 150 additional emoji characters on the default keyboard. But fret not, Android friends, newly appointed senior VP of Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, has heard your feedback and promises to make the Android emoji state better.

In a Tweet sent last night, Lockheimer confirmed that Google is working on new emoji, probably in part thanks to the new emoji released by Apple this week that includes the oft-requested taco emoji. Android chooses to represent faces in emoji using little blob people that could be a close cousin to the Oompa Loompa, instead of the typical round faces you see in most other operating systems and apps. After Apple’s release this week there has been an uproar of complaints from Android users complaining about the lack of emoji options, especially now that Apple users have more than ever.

Of course, we have no idea when these new emoji will arrive, so don’t go out and start an Android emoji countdown or hold your breath or take a shot every time a new emoji-less day goes by. As Hiroshi Lockheimer, from the Android team, posted on Twitter yesterday that they are working on it, and saying thank you for all the feedback the team has gotten. An update to Android’s bank of emojis, whenever it arrives, will bring us all one step closer to being able to communicate our every thought in little picture form. New emojis in iOS 9 include the a detective, the middle finger, a lion, unicorn, turkey and squirrel, as well as weather emojis and food emojis such as cheese, hot dog, taco, popcorn and champagne, among many others. For the most part, emoji aren’t all that fun on Android, and most end up adding an expansion app from the Play Store to get access to everything available on the iPhone.

Here you can write a commentary on the recording "New Emojis are coming to Android, Soon".
