iPhone 6S teardown confirms smaller battery, easy screen repairs.

The teardown team has become among the first to get their hands on the new iPhone 6S, and while other early adopters are likely at home caressing their new smartphone, iFixit has been quick to pull theirs to pieces. This size reduction, which Apple promises won’t make for a reduction in battery life, is likely due to the new Taptic Engine under the hood, which iFixit notes “takes up a large chunk of space.” The display is chunkier than before, weighing in at 15g heavier at 60g, due to the extra capacitive sensors under the hood that enable 3D Touch. Some had worried that Apple’s blockbuster launches had come to an end with the Apple Watch, which was launched in a less high-profile ceremony and was initially only available to buy online.

But the event featured the same long queues and excitement of previous years, with Apple Store employees applauding and high-fiving people as they entered. Not only does the iPhone 6S sport a new 12MP sensor, iFixit notes that these pixels are 1.22µ in size, a 50 percent increase that should make for brighter, sharper photos. Inside waited the new iPhones, which feature the same external look but pack in new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive “3D Touch” display.

The inside of the Covent Garden store had already been updated for the new phones, with pictures on the wall and handsets waiting to try on tables around the store. It notes that the display removal process is nice and easy which should simplify screen repairs, and praises the straightforward battery removal process. It’s not all good news, though. iFixit moans that Touch ID’s pairing with the logic board might make repairs tricky, as does Apple’s use of proprietary pentalobe screws on the exterior, requiring a specialty screwdriver to remove. The phones haven’t yet gone on sale in many countries, and so queuing and then buying from the Apple Store was the only way for many people to get hold of them.
