Five things you should know before you start your workday on Sept. 30.

Good morning. Check out Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS key features: Google has launched the Google Nexus 6P priced at Rs 39,999 and Nexus 5X at Rs 31,900 – available in India from mid-Oct and it is loaded with the latest version operating system, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.SAN FRANCISCO — Google is countering the release of Apple’s latest iPhones with two devices running on a new version of Android software designed to steer and document even more of its users’ lives. And while there are few surprises to be found that doesn’t mean these phones are a disappointment, unless you’re planning on buying them from Ireland with massively inflated pricing. It features changes that will give expanded powers to Android’s personal assistant, Google Now, so it can explore the information that people call up in the mobile applications.

Previously, Google Now learned about its users’ interests and daily habits by analysing search requests and scanning information contained in emails. Volkswagon plans to refit up to 11 million vehicles and overhaul its brand in an effort to move on from the diesel emissions scandal, Andreas Cremer reports. New Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said the company would ask customers “in the next few days” to have diesel vehicles that contained illegal software refitted, a move which some analysts have said could cost more than US$6.5 billion. The new Android feature, called “Now on Tap”, will be activated by holding down the device’s home button or speaking, “Okay Google”, into the microphone.

Refitting 11 million cars would be among the biggest recalls in history by a single automaker, similar in scale to Toyota’s recall of more than 10 million vehicles between 2009 and 2010 over acceleration problems. But that’s not all… there are also two Chromecast devices – the TV dongle for streaming Web content and a thingamajiggy to let you broadcast music with apps including Spotify, Pandora and Google Play over Wi-Fi to speakers. For example, if a user says “play some music on TuneIn,” TuneIn will respond by asking “What genre?” * Doze: when your device is at rest, Doze automatically puts it into a sleep state to increase your standby battery life; * App Standby: no more battery drain from seldom used apps; App Standby limits their impact on battery life so your charge lasts longer; * USB Type C support*: Quickly transfer power and data all through the same cable.

Google began taking pre-orders for the Nexus phones in the US, United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan yesterday (Sept 29) with prices for the 6P starting at US$499 (S$710) and US$379 for the 5X, with no commitment to a wireless contract required. The 6P also features USB Type-C for charging (though we don’t know if that means fast data as well) and the battery is 3450mAh – which is a very welcome size. The savings are in in addition to about $100-million in synergies realized after the company bought Saks for US$2.4-billion two years ago. “Overall, we are excited about the great opportunities that lie ahead and believe that our new North American structure puts us in an even better position for the future,” said Jerry Storch, the retailer’s chief executive. Lightning fast charging gives you hours of power in just minutes. * On an Android Marshmallow device, apps designed for Android Marshmallow only ask for permission right when it’s needed.

The Bay is set to open the first of up to seven planned full-line Saks Fifth Avenue stores beginning next spring in Toronto, about a month before opening three stores under the banner Saks Off Fifth, which will sell discounted luxury apparel and accessories. You can deny any permission and still continue to use the app; * Advanced controls to turn permissions on or off for all your installed apps; * Use fingerprint sensors* to unlock your device, make purchases in Google Play, authenticate transactions in apps, and pay in stores. * Bluetooth™ stylus support*, including pressure sensitivity and modifier keys; * Improved typesetting and text rendering performance; * Text selection actions such as a new Translate option that lets you translate text from one language to another right on the spot. (Note: requires Google Translate app installed); * App links: enables installed apps to automatically handle their web URLs so you can jump right into the app, rather than the mobile web site, as appropriate; * Easily toggle and configure Do Not Disturb from quick settings. (Image: Android Twitter) * More power efficient Bluetooth Low Energy (“BLE”) scanning for nearby beacons and your accessories; * Hotspot 2.0: Connect to compatible Wi-Fi networks seamlessly and securely. (Image: Nexus Twitter) * Flex Storage: makes using SD cards or external storage devices as encrypted expanded storage for your apps and games on Android Marshmallow a whole lot easier. (Image: Android Twitter) * Easily transfer your accounts, apps and data to a new device; * During setup, you can add an additional personal or corporate email account (e.g., IMAP) * When receiving calls or viewing past messages, you can now see the full work contact details even if you’re not logged into your work profile. The Android mobile platform is a key element in Google’s strategy to maintain revenue from online advertising as people switch from Web browser searches to apps. The party boasted it would add another 700,000 homeowners to bump up the percentage of Canadian households that own their own property from 70 per cent to 72.5 per cent. “The problem is the only real two markets that are holding up are Vancouver and Toronto,” said David Madani, an economist with Capital Economics. “Do you want home ownership to go up in those two markets? The Tories once again promised to investigate whether foreign ownership has been fuelling the Toronto and Vancouver markets where the average detached homes sell for about $1 million and $1.4 million respectively.

The fingerprint sensors will help quickly authorise purchases made through Android Pay, the one-touch payment app on Android devices that competes with Apple Pay. The country’s largest real estate investors have bought a record US$3.85 billion in property this year in the New York city borough, data from Real Capital Analytics shows. The purchases by Canadian investors such as pension funds, insurers and asset managers are double the US$1.97 billion bought in 2014 and surpassed the previous peak of US$2 billion in 2007. The debut of the latest Nexus phones underscores the steadily intensifying rivalry between Google and Apple as they duel for consumers’ loyalty in the increasingly important mobile device market.

The battle also encompasses tablets and is starting to spill over into the living room as both companies introduce devices that help people watch Internet video on their TVs and listen to online music through their speakers. Besides its Nexus phones, Google also began selling upgrades to its Chromecast video-streaming device and a new Chromecast model that can be plugged into speakers to play music from a phone or an Internet service. Google also provided a peek at a tablet called the Pixel C that is aimed at consumers and workers who want a device that can accommodate a lot of typing.
