Nissan Recalling Infiniti Vehicles Over Air Bag Concerns.

Nissan Motor Co. is recalling a small batch of Infiniti luxury vehicles made within the last 26 months over concerns about air bags that could rupture and send metal fragments through the cabin of the vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The NHTSA issued a notice Friday morning about the Nissan recall, saying the air bag’s inflater may have been manufactured with the wrong part, causing the inflater to rupture. “The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants,” the federal auto safety agency said. The timing of the production of the affected vehicles indicates these vehicles aren’t related with the defective Takata Corp. air bags at the center of millions of vehicle recalls. Nissan has no reports of injuries from the problem, which was discovered after General Motors recalled 33,000 Cruze compact cars for the same issue in June. Yesterday, protesters stormed the parliament and unleashed unrest around the country, successfully blocking a vote to allow Mr Compaore to seek re-election next year. It is unclear what actions Infiniti owners can take meanwhile to minimize safety concerns other than call a Nissan customer-service line or a NHTSA hotline.
