6 ways to get streaming video to your TV.

NEW YORK — Watching video on a phone or personal computer can sometimes feel less than awesome — not to mention kind of lonely, given the limited viewing angle of the small screen.

Nvidia is staying in the tablet market after being hit with a recall of its Shield Tablet, relaunching the device under a new name and at a lower price. There have been a few tweaks: NVIDIA replaced the glossy black lettering on the shield logo with brushed metal characters and the new tablet’s speakers are covered with rubberized grip surface.

The original Shield Tablet was recalled in late July for posing a fire hazard due to overheating batteries, and the product was out of stock on Nvidia’s website shortly after. It would seem the issue has been fixed, though — Nvidia was already sending replacements to affected customers, and today the company is putting the Shield Tablet back on sale for $199, $100 less than the original price. The Shield line of devices has features like the ability to stream games from your PC or Nvidia’s own GeForce Now cloud service, and includes built-in Twitch integration. This tablet followed on from the previous generation device, but made used of a bigger screen and included the faster and more powerful NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, as well as an all round better gaming experience.

These are all capabilities targeted toward the gaming niche, to be sure, but at under $200 the tablet may be a more mainstream proposition than before. The Tegra K1 is a key piece in Nvidia’s plan to be the “Netflix of gaming,” a term used by Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang during an earnings call last week. Chromecast doesn’t work with every video app, but has 10 of the 12 services we looked for; iTunes and Amazon are no-shows, at least from mobile devices.
