OnePlus Unveils New Sandstone Case For The iPhone

Android Phone Maker OnePlus Launches ‘Sandstone’ iPhone Case Just In Time For Xmas.

The $20 black sandstone cover brings the distinctive rear casing of both the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, which launched a few months back, to Apple’s smartphone.

The rear panel of the OnePlus phones has a texture a little like sandpaper, and is designed to not only feel pleasant, but to be easier to hold onto, compared to other slicker devices on the market. The product is described as “the perfect gift for your non-techie friends." By that, it means that your friends would have to know next to nothing to own an iPhone. Today’s news comes a week after OnePlus began offering refunds for USB Type-C cables, following criticism from a Google engineer that they do not meet the required specifications. I have my own thoughts — it’s a fun promotion for publicity (like this story) and also a way to raise the brand among Apple customers — but OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei told TechCrunch that is a gesture for those in the world who are “stuck” with iPhones. “Although most of my friends have converted to the OnePlus family, there’s still a hand full stuck with iPhones.

Every purchase of this case gets you an invite to buy a OnePlus X, you know, just in case even this case can not make you like that iPhone you bought. It’s not entirely clear whether iPhone users will be willing to spend $20 on a case from a company that’s synonymous with high-spec, low-cost Android phones, but OnePlus seems to think that there will be some demand for the case in the U.S., Europe, and India, where it can be purchased online now (free shipping, too). OnePlus has been teasing an accessory of some sort by using Apple’s iconic tagline, “think different”, and as expected, the company’s new peripheral takes a jab at the smartphone world’s current sales king. The company also hopes that, as we’re coming up to Christmas, some ardent OnePlus fans may buy these covers as cheeky little gifts for their iPhone-toting friends.

Cynicism aside — and I am usually pretty cynical about PR stunts — I was pretty surprise by the case, which OnePlus sent out to me in the mail. (I’m one of those poor Apple users I guess.) The finish is unlike other premium iPhone covers I’ve seen before, the texture gives you a strong grip and the case feels sturdy enough and heavy duty — I’m really not a fan of Apple’s all-silicon options. This is your chance to leave your exasperation at the door and just show them what they’re missing.” In an interview with VentureBeat last month, OnePlus cofounder Carl Pei revealed he was an iPhone-user prior to starting his current company, and he was complimentary when speaking about Apple’s products. Now, he’s trying to tempt other iPhone users over to the “dark side” by letting them experience what it’s like to hold a OnePlus phone in their hands. My only irritation is that there is no OnePlus case for the iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone 6S Plus — my phone of choice — but we can chalk that up as a first world problem. With our extensive experience in product design and obsessive attention to detail, we felt it was necessary to make a phone much better than what’s currently av… read more »

In addition to the new case, we also got a glimpse at OnePlus’ new Icons headphones, which the company claims offers a competitively rich sound thanks to the inclusion of 11 mm drivers.
