Pebble has a new face and a new pitch: I’m not an Apple Watch

Pebble Time Round: ‘World’s thinnest smartwatch’ takes on the Gear S2 and Moto 360.

It’s hard not to root for Pebble, the smartwatch that beat Android Wear to market by a year and the Apple Watch by two. Pebble has announced a brand new smartwatch called the Pebble Time Round, and the company touts it as the ‘thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the world.’ The Pebble Time Round’s band will be offered in either 14mm or 20mm and the unit is available in one of three different colours variants namely black, silver or rose gold. The darling of Kickstarter (a record $10 million raised in 30 days), Pebble still retains a sense of community with its 20,000 Instagram followers, 84,000 Twitter followers and 325,000 Facebook likes. While it offers much of the same functionality as its Gear S2 and Moto 360 competitors, it trumps its rivals when it comes to size, measuring a skinny 7.5mm thick and tipping the scales at just 28g.

This svelte profile comes at a cost, however, as Pebble says the Time Round’s battery will make it through just two days, compared to the 10-hour battery life offered by its square-shaped Pebble Time predecessor. Beyond that, the smartwatch offers the same e-paper display as its predecessors – albeit surrounded by a chunkier bezel, and runs Pebble’s custom Timeline software. A report by The Next Web points out that the device is exactly half the weight of the lightest Apple Watch and more than 100 grams lighter than a 42mm model with a stainless steel strap. In conversation VentureBeat, Pebble founder and CEO Eric Migicovsky was asked, “How can we get our watches on more wrists around the world?” According to the report, the answer his company came up with was to create a device that looks good on and fits comfortably on smaller wrists.
