Epic Games announces new MOBA: Paragon.

The makers of Gears of War introduced their new intellectual property Paragon, a massive online battle arena game, during the PlayStation Experience keynote this morning in San Francisco. The already crowded field of MOBAs is about to get even more packed, as Epic Games has announced that they will be bringing their own brand of action to the genre with Paragon.

That said, it’s highly doubtful Epic would fall victim to this kind of misstep and Paragon does look incredibly glossy and properly invested while boosting some smooth gameplay. The current bloat of MOBAs on the market right now is a little too reminiscent of the MMO obsession from a few years back that saw multiple studios bankrupted or critically distracted from other projects.

This is what Sony did at Paris Games Week, saving local “beautiful, complicatedly flawed” games developer Quantic Dream’s Detroit as a show-stopping stinger. Touting “explosive action, direct third-person control, and deep strategic choice” the game is slatted to come to PC and PS4 with paid Early Access in the spring and an open beta in the summer of next year. Depending on your choice of hero, they appear to be a wide variety of characters ripped from differing narrative genres, including gunslingers, fantastical alien creatures and more.
