Double Fine Productions Officially Announces Psychonauts 2 Through Fig Crowdfunding Service.

Tonight during The Game Awards, Double Fine Productions showed a trailer for Psychonauts 2. In a completely unexpected twist of events, San Francisco-based developer Double Fine Studios just announced the sequel to its cult classic platformer : . The narrative so far appears to be that the military is trying to crack the defenses of an island, which is protected by a little girl that is asleep and controlling a swarm of atomic dirty bombs with her mind. He escapes from his father’s circus life to sneak into a summer camp called Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, which is home not only to fellow psychics like him, but also to a secret training facility that trains psychic spies. Schafer also announced that the project is being crowd funded through a new service called Fig, which will not just fund the project with donations from end users — but also allow contributors to receive a cut of the money earned as well.

But something is amiss at Whispering Rock, and his journeys both throughout the camp grounds and (literally) into the minds of its inhabitants to solve a dastardly kidnapping case. Tim Schafer’s Double Fine are crowdfunding the sequel via, asking for $3.3million, with another $10-13m at least coming from other sources, such as Double Fine themselves, and an unnamed external partner. When we crowdfunded Broken Age in 2012 and broke all the records with the amount we raised, it really showed me the power of our community, and it made me think… maybe we can do this, maybe we could make Psychonauts 2 this way!” Double Fine will be putting up a significant portion of the development funds ourselves, and getting another piece of the budget from an external partner. However, when he gets there, he finds it’s not the ideal place he expected and quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them. In addition to offering traditional crowdfunding reward tiers, the Psychonauts 2 campaign will be the first in history to also offer investment opportunities for both accredited and unaccredited investors.

Portal writer Erik Wolpaw, who wrote on the original Psychonauts, will also contribute to Psychonauts 2 (despite the fact he still works at Valve), and Double Fine plans to bring back the original Psychonauts voice actors “to bring the band back together”. Raz must once again dive into the brains of his friends to help them solve their emotional conflicts, learning new PSI abilities and uncovering traces of a sinister behind-the-scenes plot.

In addition, video production studio 2 Player Productions will be filming and documenting the game’s development process piece by piece, as they did with Double Fine’s most recent game, Broken Age. Backers who donate $69 and above will also get access to the videos as 1080p downloads, along with special features like commentary tracks, deleted scenes, bloopers, and more!
