Report: YouTube’s 2-in-1 subscription service is coming this October

Ad-Free YouTube Could Be Launching Next Month.

YouTube might be launching its long-awaited subscription service as soon as the end of October, according to Recode. In the last 12 months there’s been additional talk of its subscription program broadening to all video content, not just music, with a report Friday appearing to confirm an imminent rollout of such a service.Despite all the ad revenue YouTube generates from more than a billion users watching hundreds of millions of hours of video every single day, the Google-owned company still has a hard time turning a profit.

We’ve been hearing about a YouTube subscription program for some time now, but if a new report is to be believed, the service may finally be close to launch. Google’s video website already sent out emails to content owners, asking them to agree to the terms for a “new ads-free version of YouTube” by October 22nd.

Re/code has the latter, which is basically a warning to creators that they must accept updated terms or risk their video “no longer being available for public display or monetization in the United States”. One monthly fee will purportedly get you access to both music streaming and ad-free videos… Both the music and ad-free subscriptions have been rumored and confirmed by Google execs in the past, although previously assumed to be two distinct services with separate subscription fees. One would give you unlimited music streaming, while the other would let you watch all the videos you need (or want) to, without ever seeing any advertisements. So it’s unclear how the company will make money from the twofer, especially since it reportedly had trouble locking down deals for its ads-free model earlier this year. A YouTube rep declined to comment beyond an amended version of a statement the company has offered in the past: “We are progressing according to plan to provide fans more options in how they enjoy content on YouTube”.

And it will be launched as single service which will bundle two services – the music service called YouTube Music Key which is already in beta and the ad free YouTube video service. The cost is rumored to be $10 per month, although it’s hard to see how YouTube would make any money with both music and videos tied to one subscription. Well, as it that time again, the newest on the YouTube subscription service(s) comes from a report out of Re/Code today, that if correct, clears up much of the speculation. While YouTube has yet to confirm anything, an email that it sent out to creators supports the rumor that the ad-free YouTube subscription will launch in late October. A monthly payment of $10 has been suggested in multiple reports over the last few months, a fee that would keep it in line with others in the streaming space.

You’ll get to keep your current user name (as long as it doesn’t contain invalid characters, in which case you’ll have to go through a few extra steps to make the transfer), and all your old comments will eventually (not immediately) migrate with you.
