NVIDIA Brings Back Shield Tablet As The K1.

Nvidia is staying in the tablet market after being hit with a recall of its Shield Tablet, relaunching the device under a new name and at a lower price. There have been a few tweaks: NVIDIA replaced the glossy black lettering on the shield logo with brushed metal characters and the new tablet’s speakers are covered with rubberized grip surface. The original Shield Tablet was recalled in late July for posing a fire hazard due to overheating batteries, and the product was out of stock on Nvidia’s website shortly after.

In a brand new promotional video, NVIDIA decided to create a “living room” complete with TV, Sofa, Bonsai tree, and a Tuba, strap some poor fellow down onto the sofa and have them use the NVIDIA Shield, all while falling 10,000 feet. Oh that’s right, they’re promoting the fact that players can score themselves a free NVIDIA Shield remote when bundled with a Shield Android TV and Shield Controller for $199. This tablet followed on from the previous generation device, but made used of a bigger screen and included the faster and more powerful NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, as well as an all round better gaming experience. For accessories, a wireless controller will be $59.99, a cover for $39.99, and the DirectStylus 2 – which the Shield Tablet K1 is still compatible with, if not bundled with – for $19.99. The Tegra K1 is a key piece in Nvidia’s plan to be the “Netflix of gaming,” a term used by Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang during an earnings call last week.
